Just Checking In

No wordless wednesday
Just checking in...

party- check
time with family- in process
packing- in process
car- sold, awaiting delivery
to do list- slowly but surely

The devil's in the details. Sometimes I think that this is a literal statement. We need your prayers to finish this leg of the race strong.

A Family Affair

How does your family feel about this journey?

This seems like an appropriate question given the prayer request for the week. We've been incredibly blessed to have support from both sides of our family. They've prayed for us, given to us and showered us with love and support. We've got to spend a good bit of time with them over the last month or so.

God has blessed us with a family that believes in the Gospel and the need to take it to the ends of the earth. We pray that those in our family that don't understand fully will be ministered to by our step of faith. Will you pray along with us that this would happen?

We've also spent a good bit of time realizing the sacrifice that our family is making as we head out for parts yet uknown. We will miss birthdays and holidays. We won't be able to come home for a weekend just to visit. Our nieces and nephews will get taller and do all kinds of things that we will miss out on. That's tough stuff.

We've been struck over and over again by the blessing that we are missionaries in the technological age. So many of those that have gone before us into foreign lands have not had the benefits of email, skype or even a reliable snail mail system. It's an amazing blessing to be 21st century missionaries and have access to ways of connecting even in a country with no consistent electricity. What does that mean? Grandma has to learn to email. Yep, we are dragging even the oldest members of the family into the information age kicking and screaming!

God sees this sacrifice and will sustain them and grow them through this process. What a joy to know that through our obedience God is growing not only us but also our friends and family. AWESOME!

Do you want to stay connected to the Hoovers? Send us your email address to receive email newsletters and subscribe to this blog to get our writings tucked in your reader every single day!

This weeks Prayer Need: Pray for our family. The reality of our leaving is beginning to become real and they need as much prayer as we do. It has really occurred to us lately that this is a huge sacrifice for them. Pray that we will be able to surround them with love and provide little things, i.e; emails, skype dates, letters, that will encourage them and keep them connected to us even though we are far away. Pray that our time with them in the remaining weeks would be sweet and a real blessing for all of us.

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Reminder about this weeks prayer need:

Pray that God would speak to us through His Word in a new and fresh way. That we would be able to know with confidence the height, width and depth of the Love of God both personally and as a couple.

More and more we are experiencing the power of prayer in our lives. This experience of waiting can be difficult on the heart and mind. Satan would relish the opportunity to discourage us during this time. The temptation of our hearts is to give into discouragement and fear. God is our Father and we are confident that He hears the prayers of His children. Prayers that are uttered in the midst of uncertainty when the heart, mind and body become weary. Prayers that seem to spill out of our hearts and lips when the eyes are overwhelmed by tears. I (Jessica) am so thankful for each and everyone that is covering us with prayer. Please, do not grow weary in doing good. Continue with these prayers. They are heard by the Father and they are felt by us.

Back in the Land of the Pines

After 24hrs. in an airport we made it back to God's country. Ahhhhhh, the sound of a Southern accent. The Canadians we met along the way were gracious hosts, but we've gotta say that a good Southern accent is like warm honey and it can't be beat!

We're running errands, reading back-logged mail, eating biscuits and grits, and rearranging all our worldly good-once again. We've been reunited with the Norbs cat briefly. He's every bit himself these days-and more-Mimi and Poppi's is evidently not a place where he will be losing weight.

This morning we hopped out of bed with every intention of getting our shots- Yellow fever, Typhoid, etc... only to find out that our appointment is for tomorrow. So we will try again...tomorrow. We will be heading to the Raleigh area with the Norbs cat tomorrow. Saturday we head to Myrtle Beach for some family time/vacation with the Hoovers!

Big thanks to our SWO family for sending us a package full of love, letters, and goodies! It truly reminds us that this work is not of us, but by God's grace that is being given to us through so many!

"TO DO" Tuesday!

Not much to say on this "TO DO" Tuesday! I think our biggest question at this point is what are we going "TO DO" with all this information floating in our overloaded brains? Yesterday we learned catheterization and today we will learn about suturing! I will try to take some pictures to prove that I am not making this up!

We hope to find out a lot more this weekend about the in's and out's of life in Liberia when we finally meet the Waines family! Otherwise we are just hanging on for the last few days of the MMI course! Anyone suspect that you have an issue of malnutrition or a crazy infectious, tropical disease? Well, after Thursday just ask us and we might have an answer-of course always consult with your physician- unless you are in Liberia!

We are off to Victoria, B.C. to enjoy the city life for a few days over the weekend! We are around our half way point in our stay! Wow! More pictures to come!

"TO DO" Tuesday

This week the Hoovers go back to school for "TO DO" Tuesday! Our trip up to Canada isn't all vacation! Nope, it's mostly training classes. We will arrive in Vancouver, B.C. on Thursday and make our way over to Vancouver Island a couple of days later where we will spend the majority of the next 3 weeks in intensive training classes. We will be taking two classes the Missionary Medicine Intensive (MMI) and the Community Health Evangelism (CHE) course.

Here are the descriptions of the classes:

MMI (website description)
MMI is a two-week course designed to equip missionaries with diagnostic skills and appropriate treatments. MMI enables the missionary to do physical exams, and to process the information gathered to come up with an accurate diagnosis, and a recommended treatment.

Photos courtesy of Equip International

or in other words...
A village newborn is brought to you with an infected umbilical cord.
An old man shows up with a badly burnt hand.
Your three-year-old has a fever with a red rash.
And the nearest good doctor is three hours away over washed out roads.
What would you do?

(Hoover's description)
The MMI consists of everything from birthin' babies to sewing up wounds...woah, we're feelin' queasy...and a lot of homework. We'll spend our days learning all kinds of medical terminology and we will spend our nights doing case studies to hone our diagnostic skills. INTENSE!

CHE (website description)
CHE is a five-day course that teaches missionaries to link evangelism with social development. Using CHE concepts, communities in any cultural setting are encouraged to identify their own problems of health, education, agriculture, micro-enterprise, etc, and then create their own solutions for these problems.

(Hoover's description)
The last week of our training will be the CHE class. This class is extremely applicable to the work in Liberia and we are excited to make the connection between mercy ministry, the Gospel and the culture.

So there it is! Pray that we would be diligent in these classes. That we would stay tuned into the material and would retain as much as possible! That's it for "TO DO" Tuesday! Check out Equip International to read more about the classes that are offered!

"TO DO" Tuesday

So on today's episode of "TO DO" Tuesday we are going to rest. What? Why? Because we are tired!

We've been going, going, going and it is time to take a short break! Over and over again Scripture reminds us that we need to take the time to rest, but not just any rest. We have to take time to rest and to refocus our hearts and minds on Christ, the author and finisher of our faith.

God promises to give rest to the weary. Here's to taking Him at His Word!

"TO DO" Tuesday: Access to Justice

Today is a particularly serious "TO DO" Tuesday. Be warned, this is not light reading, but it is important to know the seriousness of the scars that Liberian women wear as a result of the war and its after affects. Equip Liberia is doing much to heal those wounds and provide hope in Christ and justice in this present world. I (Jessica) may end up working with their Access to Justice program and feel very strongly that God's heart is for justice and healing.

GBV-Does anyone know what that stands for? Since I am doubtful that any other folks reading this blog were Women's Studies majors I will do some decoding.

GBV: Gender Based Violence

This terminology is used to encompass all of the types of violent oppression that can happen to a person based merely on their biological sex. Sexual abuse and rape against women are the primary forms of GBV. Rape is a weapon of war and has been used in many war torn countries to oppress the population. Rape in some cultures can be a violation not only of one's person, but also a cultural taboo that can make a woman unmarriageable or ostracized from her husband and community.

Equip Liberia is working to bring justice to victims of GBV through their Access to Justice program. Here is a World Vision report about the unique program that Equip Liberia has underway:

(Click on the picture to hear the report on Equip Liberia's Access to Justice program)

For those of you who don't click over to listen to the World Vision report let me fill you in.

Equip Liberia's fleet of vehicles transport victims of GBV to court dates so that they can testify against their attacker(s). Let me put it this way, without transportation there are no witnesses, without witnesses there are no convictions. The Access to Justice program (also known as Wheels of Justice) provides this service to victims to allow them to testify against their attacker(s) in court which ultimately leads to convictions and jail time. Equip Liberia also provides counseling and other needed medical services to GBV victims.

It would be wonderful to think that this was an unneeded service, but in a country that has lost so much it unfortunately is a very real need. Please pray for all the workers with Equip Liberia's Access to Justice program. Not only is this program changing lives, but it is changing cultural attitudes towards GBV. Pray for God's healing and justice to reign in Liberia.

"TO DO" Tuesdays: Birth Doulaing

Some of you know that I (Jessica) am a birth doula. Some of you know that I am birth doula but are utterly confused as to what that means. Allow me to shed a little light on the subject!

I first became interested in becoming a birth doula while volunteering at Asheville Pregnancy Support Services (APSS). I knew that Kyle and I would eventually be heading to the mission field and I really wanted some type of tangible skill to add to whatever ministry God might lead us too. Through the ministry at APSS God showed me that pregnancy opens up the door for very personal ministry. Being a birth doula gave me the practical skills I need to fully support expectant women!

A birth doula is a non-medical birth assistant that provides emotional, educational, physical and (in my case!) spiritual support to a pregnant woman and her partner.

That means that I am there for them prenatally, during the birth and through the postpartum period. I have had the blessing of being a part of some absolutely beautiful births!

Here is me after one of my client's births...long hours...but totally worth it!

Now, I don't know what capacity God is going to use my doula skills in Liberia but I am going prepared. Liberia has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. There are several reasons for the alarmingly high rate of maternal mortality. The most common reasons are poor medical care and sanitation problems that lead to infection particularly after a prolonged labor. Equip Liberia is working closely with native midwives to improve this situation and encourage rural women to deliver in well equipped prenatal clinics.

Read more about the recent Mama Kit's project on Equip Liberia's website.

As I said earlier I don't know exactly what I will be doing in Liberia, but I am hoping to put my doula skills to good use! If you are interested in reading more about birth/postpartum doulas check out DONA International for evidence based information about the benefits of a trained birth companion!

"TO DO" Tuesday: Our Growing "TO DO" List

There is much "TO DO" in the Hoover's little world right now! It is hard for us to wrap our minds around our future "TO DO" list in Liberia when we are scrambling to complete an ever growing "TO DO" list in Asheville and the United States!

Short term "TO DO":

~write "Thank you" notes to those who have joined our support team recently
~hold second (and much smaller!) yard sale on Saturday, June 12th.
~laundry-yes, this must be done in the midst of everything else.
~packing and organizing lots of Rubbermaid tubs full of our belongings.
~make a path from our front door to our bedroom that we can walk through without tripping and falling to our death.
~continue sorting through all our worldly goods!

Tentative "TO DO" for the next month:

~complete final two weeks of work (for Jessica) and a final month and a couple huge projects at work (for Kyle).
~move all of our items into storage at Ma and Pa Hoovers by the last weekend of the month.
~drop the Norb's cat off at Ma and Pa Hoovers...sad day...1/3 of our family he is.
~move in with a couple of friends here in Asheville for the last few days of June and the first few days of July.
~ celebrate our country's birth somewhere between Andrews, NC and Raleigh, NC. I'm lobbying for Dollywood Splash Country.
~July 8th: Leave for Equip Canada to take Community Health Evangelism and Missionary Medicine Intensive classes. We know, suffering for the Lord on Vancouver Island. We will be sure to post pictures so you can see the difficult conditions and harsh climate...wait that's not Canada...that's Liberia. Yes, we will soak up the mild climate and scenic beauty!

Long Term "TO DO"

~Hang around Canada until July 31st.
~Meet the Waines family while they are home for their daughters wedding in Victoria.
~Return back to North Carolina in August for a month with family and friends.
~Finish raising our support so that we can leave ASAP!
~August 8-14 we will be hitting the beach Hoover style for some fun in the sun. You should be afraid...be very afraid...
~ Rest of the month in the greater Central North Carolina region!
~ By God's grace leaving for Liberia around the second week of September!
~ Liberia bound for at least one year!

Please pray for God's sustaining power and strength for our hearts, minds and bodies. If you have thought about supporting us but haven't acted yet I encourage you to do so. We will most certainly be blessed and I think you will too! Donate securely online at Equip International's website or make checks payable to Equip International with Kyle and Jessica Hoover-Support in the memo line and send to:

"TO DO" Tuesday: WATSAN Decoded

We told you that the WATSAN "TO DO" Tuesday was being postponed...well wait no longer!

Better late than never....

WATSAN - no it's not some sort of kung fu or obscure 90's rap group. Perhaps a little arithmetic would be handy:

WATer + SANitation = WATSAN

WATSAN is an abbreviation that describes water and sanitation work that is conducted in community development programs in developing countries.

Why put the two together? Because you cannot see real change in the physical well being of a group of people who are struggling with water related health issues until both clean water and proper sanitation are addressed.

Typically WATSAN projects include providing a sustainable source of clean water (such as a well) and properly located and constructed sanitation facilities (latrines and hand washing stations). Community health education precedes and follows WATSAN projects to educate and train people to connect the importance of keeping clean things separate from well....not clean things. There you have it WATSAN decoded!

"To Do" Tuesday: WATSAN decoded (postponed)

Remember that time we were going to have "TO DO" Tuesday and then it was Monday night and Jessica realized that there was no way that Kyle was going to sit down and write on the blog? Yeah, I remember that time...

He will get to it. He always does...

"TO DO" Tuesday is meant to let you in on the details of the work that we will be doing in Liberia. It is your opportunity to see first hand how the Lord is at work in our own lives and the lives of others through the work of our hands. This week since our WATSAN tutorial has to be postponed I thought it appropriate to let everyone in on our ever growing "TO DO" list here in Asheville.

This past week was a whirlwind of speaking opportunities, work, a sleepover, meetings, celebrations, and more! This next weekend will be much needed time with family.

Then the real work begins...

June 5th we will be having a yardsale...scratch that...a life sale...

We have to sort through all of our worldly possessions and see what we might be able to glean a few dollars from. We will be up at the crack of dawn for yardsaling duties on June 5th. Let us know if you are up for helping! If you have any items you would like to donate to the yardsale shoot us an email or a phone call!

We will be moving out of our apartment at the end of June. Which means that everything has to either be sold, stored, or burned by the end of the month. Right now I am leaning towards burning because it seems simpler...Our "TO DO" list is inevitably going to get larger before it begins to shrink.

The time is drawing near for us to begin the process of packing for Liberia. It is hard to think through everything that you need to bring, send ahead (or behind), or buy over the course of a year, not to mention a year in a third world country!

Recent additions to our packing list:
Oil or gas camping stove
pressure cooker
clothes pins
good, sharp knife
linen pants

A little glimpse into the Hoover's pre-Liberia life!

"To Do" Tuesday

Announcing "TO DO" Tuesday...

We spend a lot of time talking about what we are going "to do" in Liberia. "TO DO" Tuesdays will be a day that we set aside on our blog to share the details of the work in Liberia that we are so excited about! After we make it to the field we will try to use "TO DO" Tuesdays to show you the reality of the work that we are involved with in country. How does that sound?

Ok, it's settled.

From henceforth I declare Tuesdays at The Hoovers: Liberia Bound
"TO DO" Tuesdays

Coming up next Tuesday: WATSAN decoded
